Phase 2 construction on Water Street in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland and Labrador, started on Monday, June 1, 2026, bringing a new water line and storm sewer to the area. The work is happening between Roach’s Place and Barracks Lane, with the road closed to through traffic during working hours. Residents and motorists will need to plan alternate routes until the project wraps up.
The Town of Bay Roberts says a signed detour route and traffic control measures are in place to guide drivers safely around the work zone. The primary alternate route is Route 75, also known as Veterans Memorial Highway, which connects to the Trans-Canada Highway. Local traffic will continue to have access to and from homes within the construction area throughout the project.
This project is part of a longer-term effort to upgrade the town’s infrastructure along its main commercial corridor. The work includes installing PVC watermain and related appurtenances, with engineering design handled by WSP E&I Canada Ltd, which provided updated drawings in March 2026. The upgrades are funded through the Municipal Capital Works Program, a cost-shared initiative between the provincial and municipal governments that supports water, sewer, and road projects.
The 2026 project follows a similar $2.6 million upgrade completed in 2024, which saw Maher’s Construction install a new waterline, curb and gutter, sidewalk, and storm and sewer lines from Crossroads to Barracks Road. This year’s budget allocates $3.32 million to public works, sanitation, and water and sewer services, reflecting the town’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its infrastructure.
Residents are reminded that construction hours may cause delays, and anyone travelling through the area should follow the posted detour signs. The town advises planning extra time for trips and checking official notices for updates as the project progresses.
