On Tuesday, February 3, 2026, residents in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland, are facing dangerous coastal flooding as massive eight-metre waves crash over the shoreline and push water into local streets. The extreme conditions, caused by a powerful winter storm and high tides, have resulted in inundation of low-lying areas and reports that sections of Water Street and the Shoreline Heritage Walk are impassable.

Local officials and observers report the waves are high enough to toss large beach rocks and driftwood onto the roads, making it unsafe for people to drive or walk near the water. The worst of the flooding is happening near the Mad Rock area and low-lying parts of Juggler’s Cove.

This type of event is becoming more familiar to the area, as government risk maps have previously warned that coastal towns in the province are increasingly vulnerable to rising sea levels and annual flooding. Historical records from Heritage NL show that storm-driven water levels have long been a challenge for the region, and officials say the current wave heights are particularly severe.

Local officials are asking everyone to stay away from the coastline while the water continues to batter the cliffs and historical stone walls. The flooding is expected to be at its worst during the evening high tide, which is expected to finish around 8:30 p.m. NST (Newfoundland Standard Time).
