As residents of Bay Roberts and across Newfoundland and Labrador observe National Police Week from May 10 to May 16, 2026, the provincial government is highlighting new funding aimed at boosting police staffing and public safety.
Under the theme Committed to Serve Together, the province is moving forward with a plan from Budget 2026 that invests $9 million annually to hire 46 new police officers over the next two years. This commitment includes 25 new officers for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which maintains a local detachment serving the Bay Roberts area, and 21 new positions for the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.
In addition to hiring new officers, the province is introducing a Special Constable Pilot Program with an initial investment of $500,000, followed by $1.4 million in annual funding. These special constables will be assigned to the Northeast Avalon region to manage non-core police duties, such as traffic control and guarding crime scenes. The goal of this program is to free up frontline officers to focus on core policing responsibilities. Personnel in this new role will complete 10 weeks of training, including six weeks of classroom instruction at the Atlantic Police Academy and four weeks of on-the-job training.
The government is also providing $50,000 in annual funding to the RCMP Auxiliary Program to support up to 25 volunteers. These measures follow input from policing organizations regarding current staffing challenges. According to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Association, while new hirings are a positive step, the force still requires further growth to reach national staffing averages. Currently, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is funded for about 439 positions, though only 408 are filled, leaving a gap that officials hope the new budget investments will begin to address.
The Department of Justice and Public Safety noted that these investments are designed to ensure all residents feel secure in their communities. The province remains focused on prioritizing public safety through these ongoing partnerships and resources.
