A house fire destroyed a multi-suite building in Beausejour, Manitoba, on February 10, 2026, leading to community concerns about unregulated housing. The Beausejour Brokenhead Fire Department responded to the blaze, which local reports suggest involved interior changes that made it difficult for crews to navigate.

Social media posts shared by the Town of Beausejour community on February 12, 2026, claim the building was split into several small apartments without the right permits. These allegations suggest the building’s layout was maze-like and confusing, which created dangerous conditions for firefighters trying to search the property.

The Brokenhead River Planning District is the official group responsible for checking building safety and making sure residents follow zoning rules in the town. According to the provincial building code, any extra rental suite must meet specific safety standards, including having a minimum ceiling height and the correct fire permits.

Fire Prevention Officer Susan Greschuk and the fire department work to enforce these safety standards across the region. Officials are now looking into whether the property was officially registered and if it met the required safety codes before the fire broke out.
