Power has been fully restored to the Edzo area of Behchokǫ̀ after repair crews fixed a damaged transmission line. The Northwest Territories Power Corporation confirmed that the community was successfully reconnected to the main hydroelectric grid on March 27, 2026.
The community relies on the Snare Hydro System for electricity, which includes approximately 150 kilometres of transmission lines owned and maintained by NTPC. Communities in the North Slave region are interconnected to the Snare Grid via approximately 240 kilometres of transmission lines. When these lines fail due to issues like weather, equipment trouble, or falling trees, the area must switch to backup systems. In Behchokǫ̀, a diesel generator at the Frank Channel power plant is used to keep the lights on during these emergency periods.
While the main grid is back in service, the utility company continues to monitor the system to ensure everything remains stable. Residents are encouraged to stay alert for any further service updates as the electrical system returns to normal operation.
Behchokǫ̀, which consists of the Rae and Edzo areas, is part of the Northwest Territories Power Corporation service area that provides electricity to approximately 43,000 people across the territory. The utility maintains the four hydroelectric plants that make up the Snare system, serving residents in Behchokǫ̀, Yellowknife, Dettah, and Ndilo.
