Residents in Behchokǫ̀ (Behchoko), Northwest Territories, are keeping active this winter through a series of community events at the Ko Gocho Centre (also styled the Kǫ̀ Gocho Sportsplex Centre). The Tłı̨chǫ Community Government of Behchokǫ̀ Recreation Department organized a range of activities throughout January 2026, including a Just Dance tournament and family game nights, intended to help people stay healthy and connected during the coldest weeks of the year.
On January 12, 2026, the facility hosted a Just Dance tournament where local youth competed in a video-game–based fitness challenge. Organizers say the event is part of a broader effort to offer modern indoor exercise options for young people while they socialize with friends.
Beyond the dance competition, residents can take part in regular volleyball nights and a local favourite called Krispie Bingo — which often features snack prizes, such as Rice Krispie treats. These events take place inside the 70,000-square-foot Ko Gocho Centre, a multi-purpose building designed to serve as a central gathering spot for the region.
Since it opened in November 2016, the sports centre has become an important hub for the North Slave region, especially during January when temperatures typically average between about −25°C and −30°C. The centre has also hosted Government of Canada funding announcements related to community wellness and received federal contributions during its construction and subsequent programming announcements.
