The Town of Blackfalds, Alberta, has approved an interim spending plan for 2026 that includes funding for road improvements on South Street. The interim capital budget totals about $2.8 million (reported as $2,827,300), and South Street upgrades are a key project within that capital plan.

The roadwork is focused on the town’s southern entrance, which serves as a main route to the Blackfalds Crossing retail area. Town officials say the upgrades are intended to improve industrial and commercial connectivity, help traffic move more smoothly and maintain reliable underground utilities for local businesses.

Shop owners and residents near South Street may experience changes to parking and delivery routes while the work is being planned and carried out. Council will review the interim budgets at a public budget workshop scheduled for Feb. 6–7, 2026; Mayor Laura Svab and town administration said the workshop will inform mitigation plans to reduce disruptions.

The project is expected to be funded through a combination of provincial capital grants and municipal reserves — reporting identifies the provincial Local Government Fiscal Framework (LGFF) capital funding as a major grant source (approximately $1.5 million reported) alongside town savings/reserves. Leaders expect to finalize the full 2026 budget in spring 2026, at which point construction timing and project details will be locked in.

According to the Town of Blackfalds’ 2024 municipal census, the population was 11,415. With continued growth the town is among Alberta’s largest towns and could pursue city status in the future; historically, communities seeking city status in Alberta have looked to a benchmark of about 10,000 residents. Improving main roads like South Street is a key part of supporting the local economy and managing rising traffic volumes.
