Farmers in Blackfalds, Alberta can help local youth and agricultural charities win cash prizes by recycling their old plastic baler twine. The contest, part of the 2026 Great Twine Round-Up, was highlighted by Lacombe County on January 27, 2026; the provincial contest opened January 19, 2026.

The Great Twine Round-Up is organized by Cleanfarms in partnership with the Agricultural Plastics Recycling Group (APRG); funds for the pilot are administered by Alberta Beef Producers. The contest offers four $3,000 cash prizes that can be awarded to 4-H clubs or Alberta-based agricultural charities.

To enter, producers are asked to pack clean, dry plastic baler twine into Cleanfarms twine collection bags (the program asks that twine be dry and free of debris), label the bag, and drop it off at a designated collection site. Because the Blackfalds transfer site was closed after the town opted out of LRWSC membership in 2010, Blackfalds residents can take their twine bags to the Prentiss Transfer Station/Landfill, which is managed by the Lacombe Regional Waste Services Commission.

Local groups such as the Central Lacombe 4-H Beef Club could receive any prize money if farmers name them on their entry forms. In the last program cycle the initiative diverted roughly 16,500 kg of baler twine from landfills and on-farm burning or burial, according to Cleanfarms.
