The Blackfalds Bulldogs defeated the Trail Smoke Eaters 5-2 on February 16, 2026, at the Eagle Builders Centre in Blackfalds, Alberta. This victory, coming during the Family Day holiday, helps the team keep its momentum as they get closer to the spring playoffs.

Goaltender Carson Mertz earned his 17th win of the season by stopping many of the shots from the visiting team. Mertz was born in February 2008 and moved to the community from an academy in the United States to join the team in September 2025.

The game featured two goals scored while the Bulldogs had fewer players on the ice due to penalties, along with a goal redirected into the net by one of the team captains. Alternate captains Thomas Neu and Nikita Ivashchenko, who were both selected for the 2026 league all-star games, were among the key players on the ice during the win.

The Bulldogs are a newer team in the region and played this game against one of the oldest junior hockey organizations in the country. The local club moved into the British Columbia Hockey League in 2024 to find higher levels of competition and development for its roster.

Coach and owner Doug Quinn has helped the team grow since it was established in the community in 2021. The team plays at the Eagle Builders Centre, which can hold 1,400 people and was part of a larger community building project that expanded local services.
