Schools in Bracebridge, Ontario, have lowered their flags to half-mast to honour the victims of a mass shooting that occurred at a secondary school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. On February 11, 2026, local education officials ordered the tribute following the February 10 event that left nine dead and more than 25 others injured.
The Trillium Lakelands District School Board and the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board directed all local buildings, including Bracebridge Public School and St. Dominic Catholic Secondary School, to fly flags at half-mast. This move is part of a national period of mourning for the victims, which included a teacher and 12-year-old student Abel Mwansa.
To help local students and staff who are distressed by the news, school boards have deployed counselling teams to provide emotional support. Families can expect to receive information from their schools regarding available mental health resources or plans for community vigils.
According to the RCMP, the incident involved an 18-year-old suspect, who is also deceased. British Columbia Premier David Eby described the event as an unimaginable tragedy for the families whose lives have been forever changed.
