Bracebridge residents should prepare for rapidly changing winter weather overnight on December 18. Environment Canada issued a Yellow Watch for snow squalls at 11:49 p.m. EST on Dec. 18 and a Special Weather Statement at 12:09 a.m. EST on Dec. 19, warning that rain will shift to heavy snow with accumulations of 5–10 cm and wind gusts up to 70 km/h.

At the Muskoka Airport, observations around midnight showed south‑southeast winds of roughly 30–35 km/h, gusting to about 48 km/h. Winds are forecast to swing to the west/northwest overnight, triggering sudden lake‑effect squalls. Visibility could fall to near zero on Highway 11 and other local roads.

Temperatures will drop quickly, raising the risk of a flash freeze on roads, walkways and parking lots. Surfaces may become icy and slippery by early morning. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) — Muskoka Detachment is monitoring Highway 11 for collisions and possible road closures due to whiteout conditions.

Town of Bracebridge Public Works crews will clear and salt roads as conditions allow. Overnight parking prohibitions (2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m.) are enforced during the town’s winter parking period; residents should confirm seasonal dates with the Town (the municipal site lists Oct. 16–Apr. 15). High winds (up to 70 km/h) are sufficient to break branches and can cause localized power outages; Hydro One and local officials advise residents to be prepared and monitor outage maps.

Environment Canada and local officials advise against non‑essential travel during the overnight hours and into the morning of Dec. 19. Residents should monitor updates from Environment Canada and local advisories for changing conditions.
