Residents in Bracebridge, Ontario, are facing dangerously cold weather on January 30, 2026, as an arctic air mass has pushed wind chill values down to between −33°C and −38°C. A Yellow Cold Warning from Environment Canada warns these conditions can cause frostbite on exposed skin within minutes, especially when wind chills are below −35°C.

Observations from the Muskoka Airport showed temperatures dropped as low as −32°C overnight (with repeated readings of −31°C). The current conditions are being flagged under Environment Canada’s new colour‑coded alert system (Yellow/Orange/Red), which was introduced on Nov. 26, 2025, to help the public quickly identify weather that might disrupt daily routines or pose a health risk. Outdoor workers and people with limited access to heat are being urged to take extra precautions during this time.

The freezing weather is affecting local services, including potential school bus cancellations in the Muskoka (Muskoka Zone) under the Trillium Lakelands District School Board’s zone‑based transportation policy. While schools generally remain open for students who can arrive safely, parents are encouraged to check the status of morning bus routes. Extremely low temperatures can also put extra stress on bus equipment and hydraulic systems, and require cold‑weather operational procedures at Muskoka Airport.

The Town of Bracebridge is monitoring road conditions, as extreme cold can make road salt less effective and cause mechanical issues for maintenance vehicles. Local officials suggest checking on elderly neighbours and vulnerable community members to ensure they are safe. Environment Canada also reminded residents: “If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your pet.”
