Brandon City Council has officially approved an honourary street naming to recognize world-renowned violinist and Manitoba native James Ehnes. The 200 and 300 blocks of 20th Street, located near Brandon University, will be designated as James Ehnes Way.
The decision to honour the decorated musician was made during the City of Brandon council meeting on April 20, 2026. Mayor Jeff Fawcett initiated the proposal, describing Ehnes as one of the most decorated people to come from the community.
Born in Brandon in 1976, Ehnes has built an international career, earning two Grammy Awards, 12 Juno Awards, and three Gramophone Awards. He is also a member of the Order of Canada and the Order of Manitoba. His connection to the city remains strong, as he is the son of the late Alan Ehnes, who was a long-time trumpet professor at the local university.
The project, which received support from the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium and the university’s music department, will cost approximately $100 to print and install the signs. These markers are expected to be in place by the time Ehnes returns to his hometown for a performance on May 7, 2026. The concert at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall, which features Ehnes alongside pianist Andrew Armstrong as part of his 50th birthday tour, is already sold out.
The honourary designation will remain in place for five years, after which the city may choose to renew it.
