The City of Brandon is preparing for its annual spring maintenance at the Brandon Municipal Cemetery, with grounds work scheduled to begin as early as Wednesday, April 2, 2026, according to a community reminder. Families with loved ones interred at the site are encouraged to remove personal items from gravesites to assist city staff in performing their duties.
While the official City of Brandon policy requires all items to be removed from graves twice yearly—by April 15 and October 15—the People of Brandon community group is encouraging families to remove items before April 2 to help ahead of the grounds work. This rule applies to all decorations, including artificial flowers, ornaments, solar lights, plant hooks, and stuffed animals. Only headstones should remain on the graves following the cleanup. The city notes that these guidelines are part of the maintenance program established under Cemetery By-law No. 7151, which aims to keep the grounds clear for efficient care.
Located at 1901 18th Street in Brandon, the site serves as the city’s largest cemetery and has been in operation since 1882. It features five distinct sections for burials, including areas for regular interments, Catholic burials, lawn plots with flat markers, cremations, and a columbarium. The cemetery grounds remain open to the public seven days a week from dawn to dusk.
Residents who have questions about the cleanup process, or who require information regarding plot locations or sales, can contact the City of Brandon Cemetery Office. The office is reachable by phone at 204-729-2150 or by email at [email protected], Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
The People of Brandon community group has been instrumental in sharing the upcoming cleanup reminder with local families. The city continues to manage the heritage site through ongoing planning, including the Cemetery Expansion Master Plan which guides future drainage improvements and grounds development.
