Brandon police and firefighters responded to an accidental fire that damaged a shed and garage early Wednesday morning, capping a busy two-day period that also saw multiple arrests across the city.
The Brandon Police Service and Brandon Fire & Emergency Services were called to the 900 block of 1st Street at about 12:41 a.m. on July 15, 2026, where flames were coming from a shed and garage behind a home. Fire crews quickly put out the blaze, and no one was hurt. Investigators believe a discarded cigarette butt likely caused the fire.
The fire was just one of several incidents police handled between July 14 and 15. A 35-year-old man was arrested after staff called police to a restaurant in the 2800 block of Victoria Avenue on July 14 at about 5:50 p.m. He was reportedly kicking items inside the business and smashed a window. Police released him once he was sober, and he was given a court date of September 29, 2026.
Police also arrested four people on outstanding warrants over the same period. Two were released with appearance notices and future court dates, while the other two remained in custody. Separately, three individuals were taken into custody under Manitoba’s Protective Detention and Care of Intoxicated Persons Act. They were held until sober and safe to leave.
Officers responded to three separate breach of peace calls, involving four people in total. One was an intoxicated man blocking traffic on the 1000 block of Rosser Avenue. Another was a fight between two people outside a business in the 000 block of 10th Street. The third was a disturbance at a home where a family member was banging on windows and acting aggressively.
The incidents highlight ongoing public safety challenges in Brandon. The city has been working on a Downtown Safety Strategy developed through community town halls in 2025. In April 2026, the province invested $300,000 for security upgrades, camera systems and vandalism repairs in Brandon.
