The Manitoba government is giving the City of Brandon $1.035 million to improve local services and help lower property taxes for residents. Premier Wab Kinew announced the funding on January 20, 2026, which includes money to overhaul the city’s recycling capacity and fix up community sports facilities.

About $400,000 of the grant will be used to upgrade the Eastview Landfill into a consolidated waste and recycling hub where the city plans to staff the site to help residents sort glass, paper and plastic. This change follows the city’s decision to close smaller, un-manned neighbourhood depots, such as the one at the Keystone Centre, to curb illegal dumping and contamination.

While residents with extra recyclables will now be asked to bring them to the landfill at 765 – 33rd Street E., the staffed depot is intended to improve sorting and reduce contamination so materials are recycled rather than landfilled. The City of Brandon operates the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) at Eastview Landfill; the province and city releases do not state that MWM Environmental will manage materials at the facility.

The provincial investment also covers other local projects, including resurfacing the parking lot at the Brandon Community Sportsplex and renovating team changerooms and public washrooms at Andrews Field. Mayor Jeff Fawcett said the funding is a win for the community because it allows the city to streamline services while supporting a two per cent reduction in municipal property taxes.
