Brandon, Manitoba city officials are considering a plan to stop placing large compost bins in local neighbourhoods for the 2026 season. The proposal was presented to Brandon City Council on February 17, 2026, to address ongoing problems with people dumping regular trash at the drop-off sites.
Instead of the large bins that stay in one spot, the city is looking at using a rental truck to collect food scraps and yard waste at specific locations. This follows a decision in late 2025 to move neighbourhood recycling services to the Eastview Landfill. City staff found that people were leaving items like sinks and toilets at the bins instead of using them for recycling.
The change would mainly affect residents who do not use the city’s voluntary curbside pick-up service. Currently, more than 9,500 people use the Green Cart program, which has helped keep 17,000 tonnes of waste out of the landfill over the past 10 years.
Some community members are concerned that closing the bins will make it harder for people to compost. Representative Tara Leach from Sustainable Brandon told city officials that the 2026 budget should include ways for every resident to easily get rid of their organic waste to help the environment.
