The Brandon City Council has approved the 2026 municipal budget, which will increase property taxes for homeowners in Brandon, Manitoba, by 6.7 per cent. This final tax rate is lower than the 10.6 per cent increase that city officials first predicted earlier this year.

To reduce the tax burden on residents, the city used 1 million dollars in funding from the Manitoba provincial government and another 1 million dollars from the city’s savings. Even with this extra help, about 4 per cent of the total tax increase is needed to pay back new loans for large city projects.

The new spending plan includes more than 400,000 dollars to buy body cameras for officers with the Brandon Police Service. Other local projects include fixing the parking lot at the Sportsplex, planting trees at the Canada Packers Sports Complex, and starting a 50,000 dollar test program for food recycling machines in apartment buildings.

The Brandon City Council will meet again in April 2026 to officially pass the final tax laws and the city’s financial plan. Mayor Jeff Fawcett said the budget focuses on keeping basic services running while managing the costs of a growing community.
