Brandon City Council took the first step on February 17, 2026, to allow a new daycare at the Park Community Centre in Brandon, Manitoba. The move involves changing the land-use rules for the property at 1428 Louise Avenue to let the aging building be replaced with a multi-use facility featuring a daycare. This decision aims to help local parents find licensed daycare spaces closer to their homes.
The proposal shifts the property from its current park designation to a status that allows for education and public services. This legal change is necessary to build a dedicated daycare on the site. If the plan proceeds, the project will transform how the neighbourhood uses the historic property.
The community centre building was originally going to be torn down in 2019 because of a failing floor and structural issues. City leaders eventually voted to save the site by turning it into a multi-use facility that includes childcare. In late 2025, the city provided an additional $200,000 to help finish the design work required for the project.
Adding a daycare makes the project eligible for provincial funding meant to create more affordable childcare spaces. The council will discuss the next steps for the project at its upcoming meeting on March 2, 2026. If the final approvals are granted, the city can move forward with the last steps to start building the new facility.
