On January 26, 2026, the Brant Community Healthcare System announced that plans for a new hospital in Brantford, Ontario, have moved into the layout phase. This stage of the project involves creating detailed blueprints for where patient rooms, surgery areas, and support offices will go within the new facility.
These decisions will determine how the hospital functions for the next 50 years, including how many intensive care beds are available and how the emergency room is organized. The layout is being designed to handle a local population that is expected to grow by nearly 40 per cent.
The push for a new building followed a series of major maintenance issues at the current hospital site in 2024, including a large sinkhole and a broken boiler system. In response, the Ontario government provided a $12.5 million grant to help the community plan a modern replacement.
Hospital leaders and the City of Brantford are also looking for a location for the new facility, with a deadline for land options set for February 10, 2026. While the province pays for most of the construction, the local community is responsible for a portion of the costs, which could range between $130 million and $200 million.
Bonnie Camm, the head of the hospital system, said moving into this design phase is a major step forward for the project. The work to finalize the room-by-room layout is expected to continue through the rest of 2026.
