The Food Cupboard is asking Brockville residents for donations to help a young mother set up her new home after leaving an emergency shelter. The mother is moving out of Leeds & Grenville Interval House (LGIH) after escaping an abusive situation. While she has found a place to live, her new apartment is empty and needs basic supplies to make it a safe place to stay.
Food Cupboard coordinators Marjorie, Lesley and Ann are looking for kitchen items such as toasters, kettles, pots and pans. They also need new pillows, towels and bed sheets, along with everyday basics like toilet paper, laundry soap and canned food. School-safe snacks for children are also high on the list of immediate needs.
This call for help comes as local support services face sharply increased demand. Brockville City Council declared a food-insecurity emergency in June 2025; the Brockville and Area Food Bank reported 21,537 visits in 2024, a 10% increase from 2023, reflecting how many families are struggling to afford basics. Many survivors of domestic violence leave their previous homes with nothing, making it difficult to start over without community support.
Those who want to help can bring donations to the church building at 229 Park St. The cupboard accepts drop-offs on Thursdays from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m., or residents can contact the organizers to arrange another time to deliver items.
