Environment Canada is warning Burlington, Ontario residents that a risk of freezing drizzle early on Sunday, February 15, 2026, could make morning travel dangerous. The light coating of ice is expected to make roads and sidewalks slippery during the Family Day long weekend.

Temperatures are forecast to drop to -10°C overnight on February 14, 2026, which is the point where traditional road salt begins to lose its effectiveness. According to the City of Burlington, maintenance crews must use special additives during these cold periods to help melt ice and keep surfaces safe.

This weather arrives during a provincewide road salt shortage that has forced many communities to ration their supplies and use alternatives like sand or brine. Because of the shortage, city workers are managing their salt levels carefully while responding to icy patches on residential streets and high-traffic pedestrian areas.

The City of Burlington prioritizes busy main roads like Brant Street, Walkers Line, New Street, and Upper Middle Road for ice removal. This means that smaller neighborhood streets and local sidewalks might remain slippery for longer than usual while crews focus on high-traffic routes.

Residents are encouraged to check for service updates through Burlington Transit before heading out to Sunday morning events or religious services. Extra caution is advised for anyone walking or driving, as the moisture from Lake Ontario is expected to continue creating localized icy conditions throughout the morning.
