Young people in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, have the opportunity to apply for a leadership training retreat designed to build life and relationship skills. The Arctic Health Research Network (AHRN) began accepting applications on February 3, 2026, for a session taking place in April 2026. The program focuses on training local youth to become mentors who can provide health education and support to their peers.
The retreat follows a program known as SMASH, an acronym for Strength, Mind, Action, Sex, and Health. Participants will learn about sexual health and how to navigate healthy relationships. The initiative aims to help local youth share this information in ways their friends and neighbours will trust, using a peer-led approach.
During the retreat, youth will participate in hands-on activities such as drama, photography, and digital storytelling to develop their leadership styles. These arts-based tools help make sensitive health topics easier to discuss and understand. The training prepares the young leaders to facilitate conversations and programs once they return home.
After the retreat, the peer leaders will work with the Municipality of Cambridge Bay and local wellness centres to run community programs. They are expected to apply their new skills in schools, on sports teams, and through local workshops, helping the community build long-term supports led by its own youth.
