The village of Rosalind, Alberta, is preparing to host a Memorial Crokicurl Tournament to bring the community together and raise money for charity. The specialty winter event attracts out-of-town visitors and competitors from across the region to compete on a custom-built octagonal ice surface.

The tournament is held at Detention Brewing Co., a local business located in the former Rosalind School building. Camrose County’s event listing shows the tournament is now presented as a memorial event, building on the inaugural February 21–22, 2026 competition that raised funds for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

Crokicurl is a uniquely Canadian sport that combines elements of curling with the board game crokinole. Instead of a standard long rink, players use an octagonal ice surface and slide junior-sized stones (about 20 lb) toward a central button or target to score points. The game is designed as a low-barrier, outdoor activity suitable for people of many skill levels.

The Langille family, who own the brewery, purchased the former Rosalind School to prevent its demolition and repurposed it as Detention Brewing Co.; the tournament is part of their efforts to activate the site and provide winter activities for the community of about 160 people (population 162 in the 2021 Census). Local groups such as the Rosalind Agricultural Society often assist with logistics when the tournament brings in out-of-town visitors who use local parking and visit nearby vendors.

Because the event is listed as a memorial tournament, it provides a way for residents to honour community members while supporting a charitable cause. The tournament is part of a wider trend of repurposing rural buildings — like old schoolhouses — to drive winter economic activity in small communities.
