Alberta Parks has issued a warning for the 8-kilometre Highline Trail near Canmore, Alberta, after avalanche debris blocked one of the western gullies the trail crosses. While the trail remains passable, hikers and cyclists are directed to use a detour via the Three Sisters Access, which requires users to open and close a large fence to navigate the area.
The latest update from the Canmore and Area Trail Report on May 21, 2026, notes that trails throughout the region are currently wet, muddy, and potentially snowy following recent precipitation. Higher elevation areas in particular are still seeing significant snow in shaded spots. Officials remind trail users to remain aware of spring avalanche conditions, with current safety forecasts available through Avalanche Canada.
Beyond avalanche risks, residents should expect potential hazards on other local routes. Recent fireguard work performed as part of the Bow Valley Community Fireguard project has altered wind profiles in some forested areas, which may lead to an increased likelihood of trees falling. Caution is advised when travelling on several trails, including the Montane Traverse.
Additionally, trail users are reminded that Johnny’s Trail remains closed until further notice to accommodate ongoing wildfire mitigation work. As trail conditions can change rapidly during the spring season, those planning to head out are encouraged to check for the most recent updates before starting their trip.
