A 15-year-old boy from Calgary has died after being buried in an avalanche at Nakiska Ski Resort in the Kananaskis region near Canmore, Alberta. The incident took place on Friday, February 27, 2026, while the teenager was skiing in a closed section of the resort.
The Cochrane RCMP reported that the slide occurred at approximately 12:45 p.m. and involved two skiers. While one person was able to dig themselves out and was not injured, the 15-year-old was found unresponsive by emergency responders.
The boy was treated at the scene by Alberta EMS and then taken to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in critical condition. Officials confirmed that he passed away from his injuries early the next morning, on February 28, 2026.
On the day of the avalanche, Avalanche Canada had issued a warning that danger levels would increase to high for the area. This warning covered Kananaskis as well as nearby national parks like Banff, Yoho, and Kootenay due to an incoming winter storm.
Nakiska Ski Resort is currently conducting an internal investigation into the fatal accident. Safety officials are urging all mountain visitors to respect terrain closures and always carry proper rescue gear, especially during periods of heavy snowfall and high winds.
