Residents of Canmore are invited to a special screening of the film Moonlight on May 31, 2026, at artsPlace. The event, which begins at 7:00 p.m., includes a post-film panel discussion designed to spark community dialogue on themes of identity and belonging.
This event is a partnership between the Bow Valley Pride Network and artsPlace. It aligns with the Harmony Project’s recognition of Sexual Violence Awareness Month. Organizers noted that the film, which explores the intersection of race and sexuality, serves as a starting point for important conversations about inclusion in the Bow Valley.
The YWCA Banff, which operates the Harmony Project, highlights that marginalized groups, including LGBTQ+ individuals, experience higher rates of sexual violence in Alberta. By hosting this discussion, the organizers aim to foster a more supportive and informed community. The Canmore Pride Society remains dedicated to ensuring that residents and visitors feel safe and accepted in the region.
Tickets for the screening are $12, and the venue can accommodate up to 105 guests. The facility is wheelchair accessible and features gender-neutral washrooms. For those travelling by public transit, the downtown 9th Street Transit Hub is located directly by the community arts centre at 950 8 Avenue.
Directed by Barry Jenkins, Moonlight made history in 2017 as the first LGBTQ-themed film and the first film with an all-Black cast to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. The film was based on a play by Tarell Alvin McCraney and is widely recognized for its exploration of identity and masculinity.
