Residents of Canmore, Alberta, are in for a significant warm-up this week, with Environment Canada forecasting temperatures that will climb well above seasonal averages. After a cool start to the week, the area will see conditions peak on Wednesday with a high of 22°C, notably warmer than the usual early May high of 13°C.
The warming trend begins in earnest on Tuesday, which is expected to reach 13°C. Following Wednesday’s high, temperatures will remain mild, with Thursday reaching 18°C and Friday hitting 20°C. While there are currently no weather alerts in effect, residents should note that a 60 percent chance of showers is expected by Friday, along with cloudy skies and an overnight low of 5°C.
Those planning to head out into the Bow Valley should be aware of changing conditions in Alberta Parks. Trails are currently in a transition period, featuring a mix of ice, snow, mud, and bare ground. Several locations, including the Grassi Lakes Upper, Highline, Cloudline, Johnny’s, and Montane Traverse trails, currently carry safety warnings due to these icy and unpredictable conditions.
Furthermore, Avalanche Canada advises that warm weather in May can increase the risk of deep persistent slab avalanches. As temperatures rise, layers within the snowpack can become unstable, potentially leading to deeper or full-depth slab slides. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay informed of current conditions while enjoying the approximately 15 hours of daylight currently provided by the spring sun.
