Canmore residents who rely on Global News Calgary for their daily Alberta news will soon see those newscasts produced from outside the province. Corus Entertainment, the parent company of Global News, announced on July 16, 2026, that it is centralizing production of its Global News Calgary and Edmonton newscasts to a centralized production hub by the end of August 2026; multiple media reports identify the hub as being in Toronto.
The move means local newscasts in both cities will continue, but they will be assembled remotely rather than in local studios. Corus spokesperson Annie Arnone confirmed some on-air personalities will lose their jobs as a result of the changes, though the company has not disclosed how many positions are being cut. Corus said it remains committed to delivering local news in Calgary and Edmonton, adding it will create additional roles to produce news for those markets.
The decision comes after Corus reported a $36.5 million net loss in its most recent quarter ending May 31, 2026, with television revenue dropping 16 per cent compared to a year earlier. The company is also pursuing a $500 million debt-for-equity recapitalization plan that would give lenders 99 per cent ownership of a new parent company called NewCo, pending regulatory approval.
Conservative MP Stephanie Kusie, who represents Calgary-Midnapore, criticized the move. “Centralizing regional newscasts means the local angle will be lost — but of greater concern is the power shift and control of the media message,” she said. “Having local news is important.” The announcement comes less than two weeks after Rogers Sports and Media cut 230 jobs and shut down six radio stations, including Calgary’s 660 NewsRadio and Sportsnet 960 The Fan.
For Canmore and Bow Valley viewers who turn to Global Calgary as a primary television news source, the change marks the end of an era. The station first went on air as CHCT-TV on October 8, 1954, and has been part of Alberta’s media landscape for more than seven decades.
