Environment Canada has issued a yellow snowfall warning for the Municipal District of Bighorn, including Canmore, Alberta, through the evening of Tuesday, February 17, 2026. The agency expects between 15 to 25 centimetres of snow to fall, which will likely make travel difficult for residents and commuters.
The storm includes periods of heavy snow and northeast winds reaching 20 kilometres per hour. These conditions are expected to reduce visibility to near zero at times, making it difficult to drive on highways and local roads. Residents are encouraged to allow for extra time for any trips.
Temperatures are forecast to drop sharply to -18°C on Tuesday afternoon, with wind chills making it feel as cold as -26°C. This shift to colder weather increases the risk of frostbite and can lead to icy surfaces on the roads as the storm ends.
Those planning to head into the mountains should check safety bulletins from Avalanche Canada and Alberta Parks. Heavy snow falling on top of existing layers can create dangerous conditions in the Kananaskis region during the winter months.
