Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for Canmore, Alberta, as gusts reaching 90 km/h are expected to continue through March 17, 2026. The warning covers the Municipal District of Bighorn, including Exshaw and Ghost Lake, where strong winds have already been recorded along the Trans-Canada Highway.

Driving conditions are expected to be difficult during this time. Tall, high-sided vehicles are at risk of being pushed around by the wind, and there is a danger of injury to residents from flying or falling debris. These powerful gusts began on March 16, 2026, and remain a concern for the community through the morning.

The strong winds also create hazards in the mountains by blowing snow into unstable piles on alpine slopes, which increases the risk of avalanches. Backcountry users and outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to check for safety updates from Parks Canada and Avalanche Canada before heading out.

Official weather stations near Exshaw have already confirmed wind speeds between 85 and 90 km/h. Residents are encouraged to monitor local conditions and stay alert for any objects that could be moved by the wind.
