Canmore Fire-Rescue is burning piles of debris and wood around Canmore, Alberta, to help protect the community from future wildfires. This work is part of a larger safety project and is expected to continue until March 31, 2026.
The Town of Canmore and the Municipal District of Bighorn are working together on this project. Crews are currently working in the Stoneworks Creek, Harvie Heights, and East Park Gates areas to clear away dry trees and brush that could fuel a wildfire.
Smoke and flames will be easy to see from Highway 1 and across the valley floor while these controlled burns take place. Officials are asking residents and visitors not to report the smoke or flames to emergency services, as these fires are intentional and being watched by professionals.
Wildfire is considered the biggest threat to safety and property in the region, which is why this work is a priority for Alberta Forestry and Parks and the Kananaskis Improvement District. The program is paid for by the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta through a specific community grant.
