Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) is forecasting strong westerly winds for Canmore, Alberta, on Saturday, February 7, 2026, with gusts expected to reach up to about 60 km/h. The winds are expected to pick up in the early afternoon and persist through the evening, conditions that can make walking difficult and increase risks for mountain recreation.

ECCC’s update notes that these gusts are below the typical threshold for a formal Wind Warning (generally around 90 km/h) but are strong enough to blow around loose items. Residents are being asked to secure patio furniture, recycling bins and other objects that could become airborne in high gusts.

Avalanche Canada warns that westerly winds of this strength can rapidly transport surface snow onto leeward slopes, forming wind slabs that significantly increase avalanche hazard. Wind-loading and the formation of wind slabs are common and dangerous avalanche triggers during February, so backcountry users should exercise extra caution.

Avalanche Canada and Parks Canada advise checking the public avalanche forecasts before travelling and choosing lower-angle, sheltered terrain where possible. The Town of Canmore also urges residents and visitors to stay informed through official channels (including Voyent Alert!) and be alert for wind-related hazards in the valley, such as falling branches or other debris.

If you plan to head into the backcountry, consult Avalanche Canada’s Kananaskis zone forecast and follow established mountain-safety guidance: avoid wind-loaded slopes, travel with partners, carry appropriate rescue gear, and make conservative terrain choices.
