The Carberry Cougars senior boys basketball team took a major step toward a championship after upsetting top-ranked Souris (the Souris Sabres) 83–77 on January 24, 2026, at the Sabres Slam tournament hosted in Carberry, Manitoba. That win was followed at the same event by an 87–70 victory over a Prairie Mountain/Nellie McClung co-op team, bringing Carberry to a season record of 12–3.
In the Sabres Slam matchup, the Cougars closed out the 83–77 win with composure in the fourth quarter and several key perimeter shots that shifted momentum in their favour. In the subsequent game at the tournament, Carberry employed a full-court press that, according to preliminary reports, forced 18 turnovers and helped secure the 87–70 result.
Those back-to-back wins are expected to affect the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association (MHSAA) AA power rankings — Souris had been ranked No. 1 in the AA division — and should improve Carberry’s seeding ahead of regional qualifiers scheduled for February.
The 12–3 start is Carberry’s best since the 2018–2019 season. The Cougars now turn their attention to regional qualifying games in February as they pursue a top seed at the provincial tournament.
