Carberry Cold Warning Lowered To Minus 40 Wind Chill

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) revised an Extreme Cold Warning for Carberry and the surrounding North Cypress–Langford area late on Jan. 25, 2026 (the revised advisory was issued at about 9:15 p.m. CST) and the warning remained active into the morning of Jan. 26, 2026. ECCC’s updated models show wind‑chill values holding near −40°C overnight rather than dipping into the −50°C range originally forecast.

ECCC meteorologists said the change followed a shift in the arctic ridge and increased cloud cover from the west — described in meteorological briefings as acting like an “insulating blanket” — which helped prevent the air from sinking into the deepest modeled lows. That moderation, however, is relative: ECCC guidance and federal wind‑chill charts note that wind chills near −40°C can still cause frostbite on exposed skin in less than 10 minutes.

The revision could affect local travel and school operations. Many Manitoba school divisions use wind‑chill thresholds (commonly around −45°C) when deciding to cancel bus routes, but the Beautiful Plains School Division’s website does not publish a clear, publicly posted cutoff; parents and guardians should check the division’s announcements and local school messages for the latest decisions. Drivers are advised to check road and travel updates at Manitoba 511 before heading out. Local officials also warn that the junction of Highway 1 and Highway 5 near Carberry is a known wind‑tunnel area that can feel colder than official airport readings.

Local emergency officials are advising residents not to become complacent because the advisory was downgraded. Livestock producers in the area have reported taking extra precautions — such as adding bedding and providing heated or insulated water sources — to protect animals during the extreme cold. Officials continue to urge anyone travelling or working outdoors to dress for extreme cold and to have an emergency plan if a vehicle stalls or shelter is needed.
