On the afternoon of February 15, 2026, a section of the Trans-Canada Highway near Carberry, Manitoba, was briefly closed and then reopened within minutes as road conditions changed. The closure affected the main highway between Highway 340 and Highway 34, passing through the Carberry region.
According to Manitoba Government Roads, the stretch was reported closed around 2:15 p.m. and was updated to a bare status by 2:20 p.m. These rapid changes show how quickly winter weather can impact travel for commuters, school bus operators, and truck drivers on the open prairie.
Provincial officials from Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure monitor these routes to provide immediate safety updates. Drivers are encouraged to check for road changes frequently, as dropping temperatures or blowing snow can create slippery surfaces even if the road looks clear.
This part of the highway is also the site of upcoming safety improvements planned by the Manitoba government. In late 2025, the province announced it would build a full overpass at the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 5 to improve traffic flow and safety for the local community.
