The Town of Carman and the Rural Municipality of Dufferin issued an immediate ice hazard advisory for a stretch of the Boyne River on February 26, 2026. Officials are warning residents to stay off the river because nearby construction has made the ice unstable and dangerous to walk on.

The danger is caused by the replacement of a municipal bridge on Road 22W. This work has created air voids under the ice that could cause the surface to settle or collapse without warning.

According to an official notice, all seasonal recreational activities on the river must stop from the Carman town limits to Road 36N. This includes walking, skating, ice fishing, and the use of any motorized or non-motorized vehicles on the ice.

The advisory is scheduled to remain in place until 9:00 AM on Saturday, March 28, 2026. Residents who use the river for recreation or to reach nearby trails are being told to stay away for their own safety.

Signs have been put up at river access points to warn people about the hollow and unstable ice. The public is asked to follow all posted notices until the hazard advisory is officially lifted.
