On March 16, 2026, the Manitoba government announced that 45 nurses are finishing specialized training to work in intensive care units across the province, including for patients from Carman, Manitoba. This increase in staff is intended to help hospitals manage serious medical emergencies and improve the quality of care for residents during life-threatening events.

The group of 45 nurses began their specialized training on January 5, 2026, and is expected to finish the program on April 23, 2026. This is the largest group to go through the program at one time, and another group is set to start their training on April 27, 2026, to keep the supply of trained staff growing.

While the local hospital in Carman does not have its own intensive care unit, residents who need advanced care are often moved to larger centres like Winnipeg. By having more specialized nurses available across the provincial health-care system, the government aims to reduce wait times for these transfers and ensure beds are ready when patients arrive.

Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara and the Manitoba Nurses Union support the training as a way to reach safer staffing levels in hospitals. This initiative is part of a larger plan to hire more staff, which also includes bringing in nurses from other countries and creating a provincial travel nurse team.
