Morden Intercommunity Transit is keeping its buses on the road in Carman, Manitoba, this week even though local schools have closed due to dangerous winter weather. While schools have stopped running buses to keep children safe, the public transit service plans to keep moving to help residents reach their jobs and essential services.
The Prairie Rose School Division cancelled classes because of heavy snow and extreme wind chills, but the transit service views its routes as a necessary lifeline for the community. Officials say the buses will continue to run as long as the provincial highways remain open to traffic.
Buses are using heavy-duty winter tires and GPS tracking to navigate Highway 3 and Highway 13 safely during the storm. To avoid getting stuck, drivers are staying on these main treated roads rather than travelling onto smaller side streets that might not be cleared yet.
This regional bus service was expanded in 2025 through the federal Rural Transit Solutions Fund (RTSF) to support workers in the region. It is often used by healthcare staff at the Boundary Trails Health Centre and people working in local industrial shops who do not have the option to take a snow day.
Residents should check Manitoba 511 for the latest road closures before heading out. The Environment Canada forecast for Morden shows the severe wind-chill and winter conditions continuing through January 30, 2026.
