Casselman Faces Salt Shortage Affecting Local Winter Roads

The Municipality of Casselman, Ont., said in a Winter Operations update on Feb. 10, 2026, that a provincewide road‑salt shortage is affecting local supplies and winter maintenance. The municipality is rationing its remaining salt stock, which officials say will likely mean more sand and slush on residential streets for the rest of the season.

The Municipality of Casselman Public Works Department is increasing the sand‑to‑salt ratio on neighbourhood roads and cul‑de‑sacs to stretch limited supplies. The change responds to constrained regional inventories and heavy demand from across the province; major suppliers report production and distribution limits and some municipalities say available shipments are being rationed.

Local officials say the shortage follows an early, very icy start to the 2025–26 winter and below‑normal carry‑over reserves from the previous season. Main arteries are being prioritised; streets such as Principale Street and St‑Isidore Street (which fall under the United Counties of Prescott and Russell) are being treated as priorities and may receive different servicing, while lower‑traffic residential streets may not be cleared to bare pavement as quickly as in past seasons.

To help crews operate more efficiently, residents are asked to observe the municipality’s winter parking rules — including the Winter Overnight Parking Ban — so plows can clear streets with fewer passes. Casselman council says it is monitoring the supply situation and exploring options, including mutual‑aid and emergency procurement, to obtain additional materials before the spring thaw.
