On January 2, 2026, Casselman, Ontario, was placed under an Environment Canada Extreme Cold Warning, with forecasts of overnight lows near −26°C, daytime highs struggling to reach −15°C and wind chills plunging toward −30°C through January 5, raising the risk of frostbite on exposed skin.

The Municipality of Casselman has identified the J.R. Brisson Complex as a potential warming centre for residents without adequate heat at home; municipal officials were asked to confirm whether emergency measures and extended hours have been formally declared.

Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario (STEO) says it will monitor conditions each morning. While cancellation announcements are typically made by about 6:00 a.m., STEO has no single fixed temperature threshold for cancellations — wind chills near −35°C often trigger safety reviews to protect students waiting at bus stops.

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit warns that exposed skin can become frostbitten in as little as 30 seconds in extreme cold and urges everyone to limit outdoor exposure, wear insulated layers and cover hands, feet and face. Seniors — who make up about 20.9% of Casselman’s population (2021 Census) — are especially vulnerable; public-health guidance and municipal emergency protocols urge neighbours to check on older adults and ensure pets are brought indoors.

Drivers should expect slippery conditions and possible drifting snow. Authorities advise carrying an emergency kit, monitoring local advisories and avoiding non-essential travel while the deep freeze is in effect through January 5.
