At the Chatham site of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA), a former rehabilitation patient has stepped into a leadership role to launch the hospital’s Holiday Art Initiative this season. Launched in late November/early December 2025, the program aims to brighten common areas and windows at both the Chatham and Wallaceburg sites with festive murals, offering patients, families and staff a visual lift during what can be a stressful time in hospital.

The project lead, who completed treatment in CKHA’s Rehabilitation Unit, is coordinating local artists, volunteers and staff to paint holiday scenes in high-traffic zones such as the main lobby, cafeteria and inpatient corridors. The initiative aligns with CKHA’s stated commitment to patient- and family-centred care by bringing more community-focused artwork into clinical spaces.

The project lead said art was an important part of their recovery and that returning to the halls where they recovered — now in a leadership role — is part of their continued healing. Rehabilitation staff, including Becky Elgie, Manager of Rehabilitation, Stroke and Ambulatory Care, described the murals as a therapeutic distraction that supports treating the whole person, not just the illness.

CKHA’s Holiday Art Initiative builds on earlier, permanent installations at the hospital, including Indigenous murals and a ‘Mamma Bear and Cub’ sculpture recently installed at the Chatham site. These projects underscore the organisation’s use of public art to improve patient experience and community connections.

By entrusting a former patient with this seasonal project, CKHA is highlighting both the role of patient advisors and the potential benefits of integrating creative programming into rehabilitation and patient-experience efforts.
