Residents in Chestermere, Alberta, are seeing a high of +7°C today, February 13, 2026, but should prepare for a major temperature drop and snow coming early next week. According to Environment Canada, the warm sunny weather will be replaced by daytime highs of -13°C and overnight lows reaching -18°C by February 18, 2026.

Snow is expected to begin on the night of Monday, February 16, 2026, turning the recent thaw back into winter conditions. To help with the sudden freeze, the City of Chestermere will prioritize putting sand and salt at intersections, playground zones, and on curves.

The rapid change in temperature makes ice on the local lake particularly dangerous for skaters and walkers. The City of Chestermere warns that floating ice on open water is never completely safe, especially when thickness is weakened by these temperature swings.

Officials explain that white opaque ice, often called snow ice, is only about half as strong as clear blue ice. This type of ice forms when wet snow freezes on the surface, making it much less stable than it looks after a period of melting and refreezing.
