The City of Chestermere is asking residents for feedback on its updated Municipal Development Plan during public hearings on Jan. 27, 2026. The 2026 MDP — a 25-year roadmap sometimes referred to as Chestermere 2050 — will guide how the Alberta community manages land use, new housing and development as it plans its transition from a bedroom community to a regional hub.

Mayor Shannon Dean and city council are seeking input on proposed amendments for secondary suites and a new “Boarding House” land-use category. City Council Highlights (Jan. 13, 2026) say the intent is “to manage density and reduce on-street parking in low-density neighbourhoods while providing housing options that are affordable for young families.” The hearings will also consider the Mural Outline Plan for the East Acreages (Bylaw #029-25).

The public hearings are scheduled for Jan. 27, 2026: 10:30 a.m. for the secondary suites/boarding house land-use amendments (Bylaw #002-26) and 1:00 p.m. for the Mural Outline Plan (Bylaw #029-25). Residents can register to speak or submit written comments through the city’s engagement platform (Chestermere Connect) or the City of Chestermere website.

Chestermere’s 2025 municipal census recorded a population of over 28,000, and city planners project roughly 3,500 additional residents in 2026. To help keep pace, the approved 2026 interim operating and capital budgets allocate funding for local road improvements — including projects affecting Rainbow Road North/Windermere Drive — and for recreation and park planning.

Residents can view background materials and share feedback on the City of Chestermere website or attend the statutory hearings in person at City Hall.
