Residents in Churchill, Manitoba, are facing dangerous conditions as extreme cold and wind chill values between -45 and -50 hit the community on March 4, 2026. Environment Canada issued a yellow cold warning for the area, noting that these conditions are expected to last through at least March 5, 2026.

The weather agency says the wind chill will be most intense during the overnight and morning hours. At these temperatures, frostbite can happen in just a few minutes on any exposed skin, and there is an increased risk of hypothermia.

Local officials are asking everyone to limit their time outside and to check on neighbours or family members who may be vulnerable. The extreme weather can also put extra stress on home heating systems, outdoor plumbing, and vehicle reliability.

To stay safe, residents should dress in warm layers and ensure they are fully covered before heading out. People should also make sure that pets and other animals have proper shelter from the freezing conditions while this arctic air mass remains over the region.
