On December 16, 2025, Collingwood’s downtown core experienced an emergency closure of Hamilton Street between Ste. Marie and Robinson streets and a temporary closure on Walnut Street, potentially disrupting holiday foot traffic, deliveries and seasonal sales for local businesses.
The Town of Collingwood’s Public Works Department closed Hamilton Street after crews discovered a water main break. Crews with excavating equipment were deployed to repair the damaged pipe; the town’s notice said the road was expected to remain closed until about 11:00 p.m. that evening. Traffic on Hamilton was rerouted onto adjacent side streets. Municipal notices also listed a temporary closure on Walnut Street near the downtown core; the town did not immediately disclose a cause for that work or a reopening date.
Local business representatives said the timing is concerning for retailers during the holiday shopping push. Susan Nicholson, general manager of the Collingwood Downtown BIA, said the BIA is concerned that closures could deter shoppers and disrupt deliveries during one of the busiest retail periods of the year. Trish Irwin, CEO/General Manager of the Collingwood Chamber of Commerce, said the business community is monitoring the situation and working with the town to minimize impacts on deliveries and shoppers.
The Hamilton Street emergency repair followed the lifting of a boil water advisory for the remaining affected areas of Collingwood on December 15, 2025, underscoring recent strains on the town’s water system.
