The Town of Collingwood, Ontario, is under a yellow-level weather advisory for snowfall after Environment Canada issued the alert at 10:46 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 4. Forecasters predict 5 to 10 cm of snow beginning in the early hours of Monday, with lake-effect pockets possibly receiving up to 15 cm. The timing overlaps with the Monday morning rush, raising the risk of travel delays and reduced visibility.

This weather system is moving through Southern Ontario and may be enhanced by lake-effect moisture from Georgian Bay. Environment Canada warns that heavy bursts could reduce visibility to near zero.

Historical data show that snowfall beginning between about 4:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. on a Monday is associated with higher volumes of collisions and transit delays compared with weekend events, making the timing a primary concern for officials.

Town of Collingwood public works crews say their priority is to clear arterial roads (for example, Hurontario Street) and secondary collector roads used by emergency services before moving on to residential streets. The town’s winter maintenance policy indicates these priority routes are addressed first; crews may operate overnight to keep priority routes passable for the morning commute.

The Simcoe County Student Transportation Consortium (SCSTC) divides the county into weather zones and aims to post any school-bus cancellations between about 6:00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. Parents and students in Collingwood should check the SCSTC website before heading out, as Collingwood’s zone is often affected even when nearby areas such as Barrie are not.

Drivers are also advised to monitor 511 Ontario (511on.ca) for updates on provincial routes, including Highway 26 and Highway 124, which may become partially snow covered. Blue Mountain Resort staff and early-bird visitors should allow extra travel time, as the snowfall could affect parking lots and access roads. Residents are encouraged to plan ahead and treat all untreated surfaces as slick until crews have cleared them.
