Statistics Canada is recruiting locally in Collingwood, Ontario, as part of a nationwide hiring drive for the 2026 Census. The federal agency is hiring approximately 32,000 temporary census workers across Canada to help conduct the national count, which takes place every five years to track population changes.
The agency is hiring for two primary field roles: Crew Leaders, who supervise teams, and Enumerators, who visit households to collect information. Pay rates are $31.32 per hour for Crew Leaders and $25.87 per hour for Enumerators, plus authorized expenses. These rates represent a substantial increase compared with 2021 pay (roughly a 45% increase in many cases). Local job listings posted by TRACKS Employment Services show these Census Crew Leader and Enumerator opportunities as part of the South Georgian Bay recruitment effort.
Most collection activity for these roles will take place between March and July 2026, with the Census itself scheduled for May 2026. Non-supervisory positions (enumerators) typically require about 20 to 40 hours per week, while supervisory roles generally require availability for about 40 hours per week; however, Statistics Canada notes it cannot guarantee a specific number of hours. Because the work involves visiting residents in their homes, much of the work is done during evenings and weekends. StatsCan has said it seeks local candidates who know their communities well to help ensure complete and accurate coverage.
To be eligible, applicants must have reached the age of majority in their province or territory of residence, reside in Canada with a Canadian home address, and be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or hold a valid work permit. Applicants must also complete a security screening to obtain the required “reliability status,” which includes criminal record and credit checks. Employees are reimbursed for authorized expenses, including kilometres driven and parking, when such costs are required to complete assigned work.
An accurate census count matters for communities because the resulting data inform decisions about federal transfer payments and local planning for services such as schools, roads, health care and emergency services.
