The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) seized more than a dozen vehicles (12+) during a week‑long traffic enforcement operation in the Corner Brook region. The operation ran Feb. 2–8, 2026, and results were released on Feb. 9, 2026. It focused on catching dangerous drivers and ensuring vehicles were legal to be on the street.
Officers targeted high‑risk behaviours including stunting and excessive speeding, operating without insurance, driving with a suspended licence, and impaired driving. Enforcement and checkpoints were carried out in Corner Brook and surrounding communities, including Pasadena, Massey Drive and the Bay of Islands.
The RNC increased patrols and traffic enforcement in the area after completing its jurisdictional expansion into western Newfoundland in 2024 (the expansion took effect June 30, 2024, following an earlier phase on Feb. 1, 2024).
Under the provincial Vehicle Seizure and Impoundment Program, impoundment periods vary by offence. Some offences (for example, operating without insurance) carry a minimum 24‑hour impoundment; stunting or excessive speed (defined by the program as 51 km/h or more over the limit) can lead to a seven‑day impoundment; and alcohol‑related offences at or above 0.08 BAC—or refusing to comply with a demand under Section 254 of the Criminal Code—can result in a 30‑day impoundment.
The RNC said these targeted checks are intended to remove high‑risk drivers from local roads and indicated that similar blitz‑style operations may become a regular part of their 2026 road‑safety strategy.
