A 44-year-old Cornwall man has been charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle, operation causing bodily harm and dangerous operation causing bodily harm after his vehicle crashed into a business on Pitt Street early on Dec. 12, 2023, injuring two people, the Cornwall Police Service said in a media release on Dec. 16.
Police say the vehicle jumped the curb and struck the commercial building in the 800 block of Pitt Street near Ninth Street. Two individuals on or near the premises were injured; police classified the injuries as ‘bodily harm.’ No further public update on their condition has been provided.
He is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cornwall on Jan. 13, 2024.
The crash took place during the province’s annual Festive RIDE campaign, when the Cornwall Police Service teams up with the Ontario Provincial Police for extra impaired-driving checks. Police recorded 84 impaired-operation charges in 2023, up from 70 in 2022, according to the Cornwall Standard-Freeholder. Officers remind residents to plan a sober ride home during the holiday season.
